A full circle moment, the final collection presented independently by the in-house CHANEL Creation Studio, ahead of Matthieu Blazy’s debut in October.

In line with each collection the Studio has designed, beginning with last year’s Fall/Winter Haute Couture show, the inspiration was drawn from a well known pillar of the house. Quite literally this time, with the inspiration being the house itself – 31 Rue Cambon. More specifically, the original salons of the House where Gabrielle Chanel presented her collections. The show was staged in the Salon d’Honneur at the newly renovated Grand Palais and was outfitted in creamy beige – luxe carpeting, floor-to-ceiling curtain draped walls with mirrors arranged throughout and cushioned banquettes for guests.

The neutrality of the decor continued through to the looks as well. Ecru, gold, white and black were heavily favoured colour schemes with a hint of burgundy, dark green and brown making an appearance. As an ode to the 110 years of CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE being celebrated, the craftsmanship of the ateliers was on full display. Feathers, embroidery, lace, fringe, tweed, and tulle. Silhouettes called to mind the early designs of Coco, influenced by English and Scottish styles of her time. Structured military jackets paired with flowing skirts, heavy floor length coats, thigh-high walking boots, and feathered over coats. Delicate pieces were also shown as evening gowns in varying proportions. And then there is the couture bride. A long sleeve, mermaid gown, embroidered with sequins and buttons down the back, accompanied by a veil and ferronnière drew admiration from the crowd.

Other references on display included ears of wheat, which Gabrielle Chanel used amongst her decor at her 31 Rue Cambon apartment. The wheat sheafs symbolize prosperity, luck and new life – very fitting for this collection.

The past year has been a showcase of what CHANEL’s history is, of its artisans skill set, and an homage to the designs of its past leaders. But a new life begins with CHANEL’s next collection – the first led by Matthieu Blazy as Artistic Director. The fashion world has been patiently waiting to see what Blazy’s CHANEL will look like – how he will take 110 years of CHANEL’s storied history and further the allure. We wish him luck and prosperity.
